Randomness in a Technological Culture

I often think about how our attitudes towards any practice that involve randomness are contradictory. On one hand, we have reporters on the news who utilize symbols and models to divine if it's going to rain the next day, and even though they may have moments of inaccuracy, we view the practice of meteorology as more legitimate than card reading or astrology. I think it has something to do with our fascination with feeling in control of our environment. What do you think?
