Life is a Mystery

Over the last two days the world and more so football fanatics have learnt that life is given as easily as it's taken. Denmark had begun their European cup games just like any other team but did not know what was in the horizon for one of their star starters. Christian Eriksen was making his way towards his team mate to receive the ball from a throw-in when he dropped to the ground, out of breath, without any contact from an opposition player. It was as much a petrifying scene as it was confusing. It has now been confirmed by the national team's doctor that he suffered a cardiac arrest. Thanks to his quick response and that of Eriksen's teammates, he is able to draw another breath as we speak. His motionless body lying on the ground will be etched in the memories of those who saw the live pictures for quite some time. The question remains, how does a healthy athlete running about for over half an hour drop cold? The simplicity to this is that life is like a flash of lightning in the obscure eventide. Flash and gone!

It reminds me of the tragic death of Marc-Vivien Foe, the
Cameroon star, during 2003 Confederations Cup. The fact that life and death are juxtaposed is a wake-up call that we should live momentarily in earnest, appreciating each breath and being consciously aware of our short time that is fleeting away. As we live hopefully towards the future, we mustn't take the minutes that slip off our hands for granted.
