I personally like cats the best, but I do like some dogs too. (Not the big ones.)

When I was a child my family had a cat, but now at this moment we my family are about to get a second dog and both will be Westies. I think it depends on how much commitment and time you are willing to spend with your pet. Cats are more low maintenance as they don't need as regular bathing as dogs and you don't need to walk them either, not to mention they seem capable of finding their own amusement. Dogs need more care and attention but if you have that time to spend I think are more rewarding as a pet.
