michaelmartin
The wing of a butterfly is so fragile that even the weight of a speck of dust or a drop of water could make flying difficult. Yet, the wings stay clean and dry. What is the secret? Well, although the wings look smooth , the surface is really covered with minute overlapping scales, a bit like roof tiles. Added to that there are even smaller parallel grooves on the surface of the 'tiles' allowing dirt or water to simply roll off! So, how can that be of any use to us? Biomimetic Engineers are working on ways to copy the texture of the wings in order to make high-tech coatings for industry and medical equipment that are resistant to dirt and water. Amazing! Now, how did that happen? Quote Link to comment
