Biomimetics or Biomimicry refers to human attempts to mimic or copy processes, systems or devices that occur in nature. There are many examples of this, one being Velcro,designed by Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral after studying how burs stuck to his clothes. Another is the work done by German researcher Claus Mattheck, and used in Opel and Mercedes cars, that reflects the ways trees and bones distribute strength and loads. Even the camel’s nose has helped with evaporation and condensation tricks to be used in desert greenhouses! It's an astounding subject, and one that deserves our attention.
