History vs. Hysteria

What would you think if you found that a part of your family's history that had been very traumatic to the family, was not the truth and was more make believe than true.  People sometimes get a scene in their heads that you cannot change.  Things are repeated and embellished until the truth has been changed to hysteria and untruth.  Family can be so harsh sometimes. :(

One of the biggest flaws with any information being passed down by word of mouth is that it is filtered through the thoughts and feelings of the one providing the information.  Family members are especially bad about this.  They find it almost impossible to report just the facts but must also report whether, in their opinion, these facts were proper and the motive behind them.

Perceived reality and actual reality are one and the same to the brain.

People can not help putting their own spin to a situation, it depends how close they are to the situation and if any personal guilt is involved.

Most of us do not like others to be able to see our frailties and are inclined to hide them.

So when you hear a family story, you honestly have to evaluate the Teller's position vs. the crux of the situation and then put your tongue in your cheek and do not repeat any of it to another.  That is the best damage control.

Most People perceive what they believe, seldom is it the other way around. Perception is influenced by need, so the truth can be twisted to meet an urgent need. Politicians and news reporters are the experts in those areas. Rumor mongers are of the same feather.
