First of all, they are composed of more rubber since they need to be softer on temperatures under 7 degrees. They also have hundrets of hairline cuts all over the surface of the tire which are useful for maintaining the grip of the tire on wet or snowy roads. So, whenever the temperature is below 7 degrees, it is recommended you equip your vehicle with winter tires in order to maintain the optimum stability on the road. Quote Link to comment
