When you write your debut book, make sure you have a real editor do the editing!

I just completed reading yet another book in the sea of "motivational" literature on the market today.  However, I was left with a few questions after reading it.  Not about the book's content; but about the way it was edited.

I'm not a professional proofreader or grammar specialist but I do know how to spell.  I also know grammar and formatting errors when I see them.  "The Action Sandwich" is loaded with them.  This half- biographical/half-motivational book was written by Alan Frew, the former lead singer for the Canadian 80's pop group Glass Tiger.  My problem isn't so much with the material that Frew writes about.  His personal life stories are comical and seem to be the most entertaining thing about the book.  He even throws in a motivational bit here and there.  The issue is with his "editor", who just so happens to also be his "manager" and "business partner".  Knowing who she is and what she really does for a living makes me realize why so many errors were left behind in this book.

The formatting is off, leaving a wide right margin blank on many pages.  There are countless grammar errors, i.e., commas out of place, quotations where they shouldn't be, etc.  In addition, there are misspelled words, including the name of a very prominent African man whose last name was spelled one way at the start of the paragraph and then another way at the end.  My favorite error was the misuse of the word "passed" in the sentence "We walked passed the furniture".  Any second grader could tell you the word should have been "past".

So I read the book, had a few laughs, then returned it and got my money back.  The book itself was okay, but the errors left "The Action Sandwich" with a bad taste in my mouth.
